The first time I saw Lions Lions was 5 years ago in a tiny Hellhole in Providence called The Living Room. I remember the evening really vividly for a couple of reasons:
First, the venue. The Living Room was an authentic small rock club, located in what should have been an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of Providence. Finding this place with MapQuest directions was nearly impossible, but the fact that someone hand painted the name on the busted roof did help. All the walls were black, the ceiling was unfinished, showing rotted 2X4’s, and the floor was either unswept concrete, or just flat out dirt. The stage was 3 feet high, and the chicken wire stapled to the front ripped the bejesus out of my plaid shorts (it was 2008). I was so stoked on the show that I checked their website repeatedly to find the next thing to see there, only to find out the building was condemned less than a month after I discovered it.
Second, the tour. The Sleeping were headlining and brought Envy On The Coast out for the lowest profile tour I had attended by far. The ticket was $12 and worth every cent for the introduction to authentic club touring culture. Both of the main acts have broken up since then, but a local opener called Lions Lions is still very present today.
Every single time I walk into a concert venue of any size, I see something I’ve never seen before. I noticed this for the first time when midway through Lions Lions’ set, the bass player managed to grab the massive steel Ibeam hanging low over the stage and held onto it with his legs, playing half a song suspended totally upside down and facing the crowd while somehow still hitting his notes. I will never forget the sight of that dude’s massive ear gauges swinging about as he rocked back and forth above the stage in one of the more impressive acrobatic acts I’ve witnessed.
Even if Boston post-hardcore isn’t your preferred genre, checking these guys out is worth your time. They just put out this random-ass cover track of a Bruno Mars song, which was a bit of a joke but they pulled it off without making asses of themselves and showed that they know what they’re doing, hence keeping the band moving for as long as they have.
